The CCS measurements don't translate to subjective terms like moderate or fast. They're measurements that will tell you how rod blanks can be objectively compared to one another. The ERN of 5.5 tells you is that the blank is less powerful than something with a higher ERN and more powerful than a blank with a lower ERN. Same thing with the action angle.
In the case of the F865 MHX, Mudholes' website lists that blank as fast. So for them perhaps an AA of 67 is considered fast, perhaps one of their blanks that has a measured AA that is less than 67 may be considered moderate fast. But again, it's all subjective. Hope this helps. Thanks, Chad Huderle Huderle Custom Rods Prior Lake, MN Re: calculation

Under the Common Cents System there is no subjective term used for action. It is simply 67 degrees. The purpose of the numbers is replace such subjective terms.
When you see 15 pounds on a scale, that does not make it light or heavy. It is simply 15 pounds. Whether it is light or heavy depends on the subjective opinion of the person looking at the number. ............ Re: calculation

Hi Maryann,
What Tom and Chad said about the terms is correct. I would add that more you use the CCS the more often you will just "know" what the numbers mean because you will build a frame of reference for the system. Just like you know that someone who is 5'1" tall may be considered "short" and someone that is 6'9" tall would be considered "very tall". I'll give you my own subjective interpretation of the numbers you posted, it may help: A 5.5 ERN would be dead center as far as power range for a 5 weight line and would suit most anglers casting moderate distances (30'-60'). The AA of 67 would indicate an action in the lower half of the "fast" range for 5 wt fly rods in my opinion. Action angles do tend to decrease as ERN (intrinsic power) increases for the same length fly rod. This is because heavier (larger ERN) fly rods become very exhausting to cast if the action is too fast (I would say too fast is AA 70 or greater for 8 wt or greater ERN). Again this is just my opinion based on my own frame of reference with CCS. I would strongly advise everyone to keep using the CCS. I can say that after using it for some time now, I could not imagine trying to define blanks effectively without it. Take care. -The Batson TEAM BatsonEnterprises.com Re: calculation

Geoff, I too have the same reference as you. I made a mistake in the way I worded the subject .I am aware that Commom Cents is objective. I thank you for your info it helps me consolidate my thinking. I am happy to say there are Quickline blanks in my immediate future. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 08/27/2012 03:51PM by Maryann Cohen.
