Hi,
I'm not a rod builder but one of your rod building buddies suggested I might be interested in your forum. I'm in the golf shaft measurimg business. I build test equipment to measure the characteristics of golf shafts. After talking to my customer it was obvious that we have a lot in common. We measure the stiffness, the zone profile and the spine and neutral planes of the golf shaft to build a proper set of clubs. I assume you folks do much the same. I've written a number of Tech Notes on these subjects on my web site. You might be interested in the measurement of the spine and neutral locations of the shaft as well as it's stiffness profile. Cheers, John www.csfa.com Re: New Visitor

I have read the entire primer for SST Pure. It was interesting, but IMO it doesn't apply to fishing rods. We deal with an object "pulling" on the shaft ... lure, fish, etc. In addition, we add "weight" to the shaft on what is generally a single plane, but at various points along the length. If you have any thoughts on this thinking, please do share. Re: New Visitor

I am very familiar with John Kaufman. Several years ago I had several phone conversations and numerous e-mail exchanges with John in an effort to get him to build a low cost resonant frequeny analyzer for fishing rod blanks much like the ones that he builds for analyzing golf club shafts. Unfortunately he had more work then he wanted building equipment to analyze carbon fiber golf club shafts and was not interested.
I came to know John to be an exceedingly competent engineer who has done a good deal of research into the characteristics of carbon fiber shafts that pertains not only to golf club shafts but also to fishing rod blanks. I learned a good deal from the technical notes that he put on his web site (csfa.com) and I think that any custom rod builder that wants to lean more about the characteristics of carbon fiber rod blanks would do him or herself a big favor by carefully going over these technical notes. In my judgment there is no other source that is as informative as John's technical notes. Re: New Visitor
