Power wrapper clutch idea

The power wrapper I built has been working very well... Makes quick work of long butt wrapps. My issue is that I still need to have the ability to turn the rod by hand as well. My wrapper uses a DC drill motor which has a 2 speed gear box. So when all the belts etc are attached and the rod is tight in the chuck you cannot spin the rod.
I was thinking about possibly using some type of electromagnetic clutch out of a copy machine. Just not sure how I would do it. Anyone run into this issue in the past. Re: Power wrapper clutch idea

Casey,
Why do you need to be able to move the rod by hand? Can't you get your wrapper to turn slow enough for you. A good DC gear motor setup should allow you to turn the rod at about 1/2 rpm - in either direction. Take care Roger Re: Power wrapper clutch idea

Mine is set up so that I can roll the belt off quickly when I turn by hand. David Dosser Coshocton, OH Re: Power wrapper clutch idea

It may be that im kinda new to this but for some short wraps I like to turn my hand. Especially when needing to move several turn forward then reverse for just a second. By hand just seems easier for some things. Re: Power wrapper clutch idea

Casey,
Move your motor reversing switch to a foot pdeal so that you can leave your hands on the pole, tap your foot to reverse, tap it again to go forward and you should be good to go. I would expect that it would be much easier to move your reversing switch to a foot pedal than to implement a different drive clutch. Take care REW Re: Power wrapper clutch idea
