I am rebuilding an old fiberglass 7'6" JC Higgins 6wt fly rod that was my grandfathers, the rod needs a new Furrell for sure.
I was thinking about making a spigot furrell for it out of some old graphite shaft I had lying around. The graphite has got to be better than metal right? Certainly more flexible? I know guys have done this using solid fiberglass shafting or old scrap fiberglass blank but I dont have any of that, I do have lots and lots of scrap graphite. What do you guys think? 1. try the graphite 2. Wait and buy some fiberglass 3. buy a replacement metal furrell. Jason Re: fiberglass rod furrell question

For in internal spigot ferrule for that rod, a heavy wall glass plug would be best.

I agree with Tom that a glass spigot would be best; you can buy a solid fiberglass rod at a flea market or thrift store for nearly nothing, which will provide any size material you need for the spigot.. Solid glass is easier to match tapers (you can sand it without significantly weakening it), which will give you a better fit of the ferrule, especially on the side which goes into the tip section. You'll need about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inch seated into the butt section, and a similar amount projecting for the tip to seat on. Remember that you'll need a gap of 1/8 to 3/16 inch when the tip is fully seated to provide for wear, and to bevel or round off both ends of the spigot to reduce stress at the transition points..
