mosiac or shatter nail polish

For those of you like dabbling in a bit of nail polish in your spare time, has any one given any thought to using this stuff on their rods with a coat epoxy over the top?. The wife left the magazine open on the coffee table a few days days and noticed the nail polish and immedicately had an idea on how I could use it on my rods, yes my rod,and not on my nails.

Funny story. I met the wife at local shopping centre today and while we were there I asked if she could see if they had any of mosiac nail polish. In toe, I followed my wife into a shop that see nail polish and the like. When she asked the shop assistant if they had any such stuff she said yes but only in black. My wife looked at me and is black Ok or need a different colour. I said the wife, in front of the shop assistance, what ever "you" like dear. I prefer the yellow or white on you.

I saw the white in the catalogue and it look awesome. I reckon it would look great as a ramp or some guides. I imagine that a light coat epoxy would need to be applied first followed by the mosiac polish and then another coat of epoxy.

G'Day Biil I had the same thought about 18 mths ago & tried it on a piece off scrap. I was thinking of using for marbling but it didn't work there was to much acetone in the lot that I used & it came out translucent .To my mind there is not enough pigment in it to give any depth of colour also the acetone thins the epoxy too much for my liking. The only thing that I found to use it was in the winding checks that I make from epoxy where a translucent colour can look OK .Maybe some else has had success with it & will chime in. I should add that I only tried normal nail polish

Bill & Barry

I have successfully used sally hansen crackle nail polish on two rods. I made several test runs on my test sticks and came up with a proccedure that works for me. It takes a number of steps - listed below.

black crackle over metallic thread - looks like little lightning bolts through the black when you get it out in the sun!

1 put down a solid layer of metallic thread with black "trim wraps" on either end. i used both gold & teal metallic threads.
2 seal matallic thread with cp (eliminate the bubble problem).
3 put on a layer of clear sally hansen hard as nails. (the crackle wont "crackle" over plain cp or finish - it must be clear nail polish)
4 with rod rotating apply a layer of black crackle nail polish over the clear. use the black trim wraps as starting and ending edges. put it on heavy - it dries very fast. it also will start to "crackle" quickly. allow the crackle layer to completely dry.
5 put a few coats of cp over the crackle layer and allow to dry. (again... to eliminate the bubbles from air trapped under the crackle)
6 apply several coats of epoxy finish. the crackle layer will be slightly rough or lumpy. apply as many coats of finish as needed to get a smooth surface.

If I remember correctly I posted a couple of pics on the photo pages a few months back, i think under butt wraps category ???
I'm also going to see what it looks like over HT electra thread, fish hawk kaleidoscope thread, prizmatic mylar, etc. etc.
I'm also going to try the different colors of crackle nail polish. (I'm not very artistic with the thread butt wraps)

I actually got the nail polish idea from a paragraph or two in RodMaker Magazine, written by C. Boyd Pfeiffer.
