I was just at our local tackle shop and they just recently accepted on consignment a dozen "custom" made rods. The makers marketing gig was spiral wrapped rods except the butt guide was placed at 90 the next was 120 (about 3 - 4 inches from the 90) then 180. I realize it doesn't really matter how you get down to 180 but this was a configuration the I hadn't seen before.
They were good looking rods priced about $140 to $170 for bass to salmon/steelhead lines. The maker was not local but had a relative in the area peddling them. Re: New twist to a spiral wrap

Joy Dunlap pioneered that type spiral wrap system a few decades back. It will work fine, provided you aren't pulling crankbaits that cause line to pile heavy to the spiral side.

Also with it at 90 What about line hitting your hand - depending on how you hold the rod -- I use the 0 butt guide to keep line off the hand and or thumb Bill - willierods.com Re: New twist to a spiral wrap

It looks to me that having that quick of a transition with the guides that close together there would be more resistance or friction on the line passing through the guides than on a "slower" spread out configuration which would/should make for a little longer casting distance. But, like they say, "if it works for you and you like it, do it!". Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
