Question about "The Big Picture" setup.

Looks like a long winter and I'm already bored so I may try to set up a jig to measure the Big Picture. I think I understand the procedure except for the chart used in the illustration. You could use any chart or graph paper you want. The idea is simply to be able to record your measurements in a consistent way.
