Fly rod guide size question

This is my first fly rod build, a 9’ 6wt on a closeout blank from a sponsor. My question is on running guide size. I see from spacing charts recommendations go down to size 1 snake guides, and others recommend larger. I fish for trout and use 5wt or 6wt rods, snake guides with nail knot connection, and I would never see freezing temps at my age unless the fish are huddled around the campfire. My question is; what does one consider in guide size to line size if anything? Also, what is equal to size 1 snake guide, to single foot metal guide or a single foot inserted guide?

I assume size 1 snake guides is right for what I am doing, and larger maybe in freezing conditions, and maybe larger yet if using a loop connection; am I on the right track?

Thanks,
Chuck

go as small as you can and still be able to pass your knot connections.....i really like the minima guides for my rods now and you should be able to go to a size 4 maybe smaller

Many of the guide charts seem to stop at a size 2. I usually go down to a size 1 on a 6 wt. a 1/0 on a 5wt and below.
On single foots I would think an 1/0 would be more than fine.
I haven't had a problem with knots yet.

Don't be afraid to use ceramic guides on the build, if cold weather is not an issue..

You should be good to go down to 2's and 1's. Just finished an 8'6" #5 and last 4 were all #1 single foot recoils.

Todd, mind sharing your guide layout? I just purchased a couple of 8'6" 5 weights and have never built a fly rod before. Big difference between regular guides and reel seats compared to fly rod stuff.

The 5 weight will be fresh water only so I doubt I'll spring for recoils. I do have a 6, 9, and 12 weight to go though. Now if I only knew how to use a fly rod:)
