Madiera overwrap issues

Hi Guys,

I recently tried to wrap some guides with red Madiera thread. The wrap was a very simple one.....all red underwrap, couple of coats of CP, and then finish. No problems up to now, everything going as planned. Once the finish has set, I put on the guide, and wrapped it with a double wrap of red (exact same color as the under wrap).....double wrap got two coats of CP, left to dry over night, and then a coat of finish. I used the toothpick trick for the tunnels.......its at this point things went down hill. All the guide wraps went dark at the tunnels....it was very clear to me, the epoxy made the tunnels dark once I push it into the tunnels.

Now question is how do you guys manage such a problem? Would pushing CP into the tunnel, and THEN epoxying the tunnel stop the dark shading? If I CP the first wrap, and then wrap the second wrap (ie sandwitch CP between the two overwraps, and then again CP the outer wrap).....would that have helped? any tips you guys give me would be very helpful......

I guess the easiest answer would be to use another thread, however there in no company right now that makes the selection of Madiera......so I would prefer learning all the little techniques to use this thread.

Regards,

Farid Badri

Hi Farid,
Only ever had that problem with Madeira on a blank with no finish and that was with a single overwrap. Yes it will help to fill the tunnels with cp and make sure the thread is fully saturated with cp but with no excess. I usually put three coats of cp on before applying finish. If your using a double overwrap it might be wise to apply a coat of cp between them to help fill the tunnels and then another three coats of cp to the finished wrap. Hope that helps.

Col,

Thanks for the info...I will definitely try putting on a coat of CP on the FIRST overwrap next time.
