I have 4 spinning rod that I need to build for Christmas gifts. These will be for kids--the oldest being 15. I thought I had more spinning rod blanks than I do. Most of the blanks I have are flyrod blanks. I know the fish won't care, and the kids won't either. These will be used on inland lakes for panfish and walleye.
Have others done this and are there any suggestions as to the flyrod blank used to do a spinning rod? I have 30+ fly blanks and only 2 spinning rod blanks. I guess I am tryiong to save myself some money by using some of the blanks I have on hand. Suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Herb Re: Spinning rod with fly blank

They'll work fine. Just remember that few fly rods have the sort of fast action that most spinning rods do. With that in mind, I'd select the very fastest fly rod blanks you have and use those.

We have done that a lot over the years.
As Tom says, they will not be as fast, but that could be a plus for youngsters. Something in a 4, 5, or 6 wt depending on line and fish weight. Keep it light and they will have a blast with panfish on a spin built on a fly blank. I recently built one for my daughter on an 8'-6" 7/8 weight that I bought from Roger on %^(*. It's great casting a float rig for panfish and it has handled bass to 3 lbs. It is slower, so the casting stroke needs to be adjusted but for a youngster with limited wrist strength it should be great. Re: Spinning rod with fly blank

One of my favorite rods is a 7 1/2 foot 3 wt fly blank built into an ultra light spinning outfit, Shimano 50 (or 500?) quite small reel. Works great for 1/8 crankbaits. Fly blanks, I would think , would be good for kids as they are very forgiving. I agree with Tom K that if you have a choice, take the faster fly blanks for this project. I used the new concept method, and it works great. Don't worry about going long on these rods- they are light and easy for kids (and adults) to cast. I've caught 19 inch bass and 22 inch walleye on mine, no problem in water without a lot of stuff you want to force the fish out of. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
