A surf rod is made to carry a fare amount of lure weight

I would get a blank the size you need

Are you making a ferrule? The problem with inserting the smaller tip into a larger butt is that you have no taper-lock and any wear will constantly loosen the fit.

Maryann; If you are extending the tip end , tip into butt, you will have to have ferrules, won't work without them. Like Tom said , you don't have the taper-lock. If you want to make the rod 2 feet longer, extend it in the butt end so you will have the taper-lock.
If you extend the tip end it must be tip OVER butt or ferruled, one or the other.
Hope that makes sense to you.
