hi
i started doing a chevron the other day but the thread keeps sliding through the masking tape and the calstar blank so i didnt apply as much pressure to the thread and i noticed i got halfway through the 2nd chevron and threads were slipping from the tape so i pulled them all off to start again i was wondering is there better tape than masking tape to hold the thread and or will the tread bite better and not slip if i put a underbind?? cheers Tristan Sydney, NSW Australia Re: start of a chevron

Try wrapping several layers of the blue painters tape first. Then put some double backed carpet tape on top of the masking tape. The masking tape is used solely for the purpose of a little cushion so when you remove the carpet tape you will not cut into the blank so easily.

Get a masking tape with with better tackiness. The 3m tapes seem to work best for me. once you get several threads on there, put a fresh layer on over that. You'll end up with a wad of tape by the time you're done. If you make sure to wrap the thread over itself on the tape it helps as well. Rufus Port Saint Lucie, FL Re: start of a chevron

My book Decorative WRaps explains teh easiest and cleanest way to attach threads to the blank, and allows for easy removal once you're done. DOuble stick carpet tape, a popsicle stick, paper towels and some masking tape and you're all set. Re: start of a chevron

I use double sided tape. I wrap a few times around the tape and then onto the blank. When I get to the other side (if I need to stop on the other end) I wrap around the tape a few times and apply a small tag of tape to hold the thread down. On both sides I always wrap the thread around itself on top of the tape. It holds just fine that way. David Dosser Coshocton, OH Re: start of a chevron

I follow Billy Vivona's method and attach popiscle sticks around the rod ciushioned with masking tape.I then use double sided tape to hold the thread making sure you don't touch the ttape unnessarily.
The popsicle sticks ensure that you don't cut the grip when cutting off the thread. The double sided tape can be obtained from Mudhole and carpet retailers. Re: start of a chevron

Another vote for Billy's Method 100%, I used to use "upside down" masking tape, and have to do a few layers throughout the wrap, at most with an intricate closed wrap, I use 3 layers of double carpet tape. Readily available at any hardware store and even though it may only be 25ft per roll (or something like that), you use very little of it per rod. I went with Billy's method ONCE, and never looked back to the other option again. Re: start of a chevron

Shipping USPS is $14 to Australia (from NY, probably the same form anywhere else in the US)
Ross should have copies at Therodworks. Dave Boyle form VisualWRap might have a few copies as well, not sure. Matagi in Japan has them, as well as @#$%& & Mudhole, and angler's resource Re: start of a chevron

hi , i also use tape 1/4 inch purchased from the automotive paint & hardware store { not a hardware store } made by 3m too . it's made ror the pin stripping work , really good adhesion to rod blank's and it's thin , easy to work with . would recommend using a good heavy tape dipenser, found at most office supply stores . that way it can be a 1 handed operation to pull & cut tape with just one hand , save's alot of work & you can hold thread with the other hand //.. good luck .. tireman Re: start of a chevron

Get Billy's book, you will use less tape and have less headaches removing that tape you use. No more "oops, the blade slipped and sliced half of the wrap that I just spent 7 hours on" accidents. Re: start of a chevron

You can also wrap a tooth pick or small straw onto the blank and then when you take it off you have room to slid scissors under the tape No more oops Bill - willierods.com Re: start of a chevron

I build golf clubs once in a while, I haven't priced the carpet tape, but the rolls of double grip tape that you can get from places like Golfsmith.com work great, they're not expensive and come with a pretty big roll. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
