epoxy over underwrap first?

I just completed the underwrap and center trim bands. Is it a good idea or not to epoxy the underwrap, before placing and wrapping guides? I would like to hear how you guys do it. Thank you.

I do both at the same time.

I do as Ken does. Since I use A for underwraps and D for overwraps in opposing directions, I have no issue with placing/wrapping guides on the unfinished thread.

Is there any reason to have an underwrap other than looks. I was just curious if it added any strength or advantage over non underwrapped blanks

I would finish the underwrap and then wrap the guide after it has cured hardened. At least that way, it cuts down on the aggravation of trying to wrap over the bottom thread.

I finish the underwrap with a very light coat of epoxy. VERY LIGHT.
THEN, wait 24 hours and wrap over em. works well!

Not at all. It is strictly an aesthetics issue.

I like a light coat on mine. Seems easier to wrap. I "think" in the past it was felt that the underwrap help to prevent the guide from digging into a blank. A few seconds with a round file to make sure the guide is burr free negates that concern. At this point I'd call it more tradition based than anything else. Still most will insist on them once you get up to a certain class. I don't recall ever seeing an 80# class roller guide rod without them:)

I also do both at the same time. I've even done triple wraps after both guide wraps were wound. Also, I don't have any issues with wrapping thread over top of thread...even the same sizes (ie. A over A). Although it is a breeze to wrap D over A. But then I don't have problems when triple wrapping D over D. I just don't see this as an issue...having been there.

Hi Paul,
Another who does both at once and I'm usually wrapping Madeira over Madeira with a coat of cp in between. Don't have any problems doing this. I'm building saltwater rods and the only time I go without an underbinding is when I'm looking to build a minimum weight rod and then pay particular attention to guide foot prep.

Paul, I usually do at the same time. However, when I build big stuff, I.E. trolling rods I coat each layer with U40 Permagloss then coat all with epoxy.
