My friend has asked for a bamboo rod to catch big snook in heavy current, does anyone know where I might find a bamboo blank suitable for such a purpose? Rufus Port Saint Lucie, FL Re: Bamboo spinning rod

Make sure you don't offer a warranty. "Big snook in heavy current" equals some SERIOUS fighting power. They easily reach 40+ inches and are like largemouth on steroids. I use very strong tackle when pursuing the big girls. Re: Bamboo spinning rod

I'm an avid snook fisherman myself I understand the power they have, thats why I was asking. I'll give anglers roost a call. Thanks for the advice. Rufus Port Saint Lucie, FL Re: Bamboo spinning rod

Rufus, let us know what you figure out. I have some of my Dads old 11' poles that are made out of Calcutta Bamboo some are close to 50 years old. I have them on the wall now but feel like they would still hold up surf fishing. Would not mind building one from scratch if i can find a supplier. Re: Bamboo spinning rod

Rufus I'm not sure what you are looking for. Being a westerner who has never been to the south I know very little about Snook or how you fish for them. I came across a rod at an estate sale many years ago. This rod is a bamboo rod consisting of a six and half foot tip section with a ferrule at the butt of the tip section and a 30 inch wooden handle with a combination reel seat and ferrule at the top of the handle section. This is a very stout rod. When I received this rod there was only one guide on it. There is a decal on the tip section indicating it was made by Kingfisher. The reel seat also has Kingfisher engraved into it. By the way the reel seat and ferrule appear to be nickel silver, but there is a crack in the reel seat. I don't have enough pennies to do a CCS measurement on a rod like this so I don't know the power of this blank. If this is the type of rod needed for Snook, you might want to try looking for this kind of rod in your area. I hope this info is helpful and if any of you know about this kind of rod, please send me an e-mail or post on this thread. Thanks.

What you almost certainly have is a Montague Rod company bamboo rod made before WWII. They made lots of bamboo rods - probably more than any other company throughout their long history. Unfortunately with the exception of fly rods there really isn't a lot of information about different company's bamboo boat & / or surf rods. Edited 1 time(s).
