Steve, Black stays opaque even without color preserver. That's Gudebrod black. I have minimal experience with opther brands. Re: Black thread

It has been my experience that if you use CP on black thread is takes on a more sparkly appearance and is not quite as 'black'. If you use NCP black, it looks more deep navy blue than it does black under certain lights. I just use reg nylon black and no CP on it for the deepest black I can get. I have never had any sort of underneath threads show through unless I failed to pack the black tight enough. Packing is the key

You have to pack the thread as tight as you can. Use your fingernail and pack them about every 1/8th or so. Shine a light across the wrap to check. Re: Packing is the key
