I have an inexpensive fly blank that has an issue with the ferrule. It seems that the male section is making strong contact in the female section at a point about 3mm down from the tip of the male end, and there is a slight (tenth of a mm maybe) gap at the ferrule seam (at the end of the female section where the two pieces meet). Assuming I don't want to epoxy the two sections together, what would be the best repair?
1. Sand the tip of the male end so it can be inserted a mm or two further into the tip section. 2. Trim a mm off the female end to reduce the gap at the seam 3. Trim the female end (tip section) and construct an internal ferrule (very difficult, I know) 4. Other Note: I want the repair to be permanent, so I don't want to use wax or teflon tape or scotch tape to fill in the gap. I am leaning towards option #1 Re: tip over butt ferrule repair

This was fully covered in an issue of RodMaker about a year ago. You need to trim just a tad from the end of the male section so it can extend further into the female section and fully seat along it's full length. Try cutting 1/8th inch and test fit.

Is this an old rod Scott?
The reason I ask is back in the day tip over butt ferrules were designed to have a small gap at the base of the male. This allowed for ware. If your rod mates up nice & tight and doesn't "click" or slip apart a "repair" isn't needed just because of a gap.. Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. I think by gap he means in the circumference, not in a spigot.

No, it is a newer rod blank, and it does "click" when flexed back and forth. Re: tip over butt ferrule repair
