I have decided to build my first rod with the Seeker CLB 708 rod blank. The butt diameter is .780. I want to use the alps heavy duty real seat, I also want to use hypalon grips 12' rear grip, and 6" forgrip. The hypalon grips come in 1/14or 1/38 diameter and 1/2" or 11/16 inch inside diameter. I want to use a gimble. Will the o.d. of the grips need to be shaved down to match the diameter of the gimble? Thank you in advance Paul Re: need help with rod build

Hi Paul,
No. Most of my rods with hypalon and gimbals have the hypalons a bigger diameter and I don't think they look out of place. You can if you want to but tape up the gimbal before sanding. If you sand it down to match the gimbal it will most likely be smaller than the od of the reelseat. ESFNEM Col Port Kembla, NSW Australia Edited 1 time(s). Depends on the outside diameter of the gimble. I'm not sure what that is, but you might be able to get a matched set up through Mudhole with their custom handle options. [www.mudhole.com]
I'm not sure if they have one that includes a gimble though. Also, if you call them, they can tell you what you will need. They are very helpful. David Dosser Coshocton, OH Re: need help with rod build

The only ones I have where the gimbal is the size of the grip are either slick butts or unibutts . My
EVA grips are fatter than the gimbal and have no concerns with the rod holders. They are actually a little easier to lock into the pin as they center a little easier. Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: need help with rod build

I think you will find the 1.38" OD fills the hand better. Make the gimbal a little smaller or equal in OD. I often use the fuji GC25 graphite gimbal with matching srcgc25 cover and it mates perfectly. Or you can use an aluminum gimbal, with no cover, such as the perfection ball gimbal or american tackle atg-4.
Factor in the length of the gimbal and adjust rear grid. Often 8-10" of hypalon is enough. Depends on if you use a belt or fish under you armpit. Personally I'd be inclined to go shorter on the rear grip and maybe a tad longer on the front. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
