Sanding a Blank

Gents,
I have some Xzoga blanks which have a rough spiral finish to them.
Does anyone know if sanding them smooth would work in the context of blank strength? I have noticed that at the ferrule location, they have been sanded to get the blank to fit the handle tube.
Any info or opinion would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Chris

If you're careful to block sand, lengthwise, and only go to the point where the spiral ridges just begin to disappear, you should be okay. Go very easy on the upper 1/3rd of the blank, allowing just a bit of the ridge line to remain if you can. That's the area that is most critical in this instance.

Mr Kirkman has the best advice.

But if you have a lathe, and as long as you have a light touch and don't burn the blank, you can use the lathe to clean up the blank.

Just take your time, don't over heat the blank, and be careful to not to remove too much. One slip and the blank will be gone.

Hi Guys,

From the manufacturer, I got this message:

"If you sand off the PYTHON wire wrapping of the blank, it will drop at least 5-6% power and toughness in the case of professional water sanding. If you sand it by hand then we can't gaurantee the performance."

I guess I won't be sanding these blanks.

Thanks to all for your responses.

Cheers
Chris
