I have a hand wrapper and would like to try a decorative butt wrap. I've seen them done on power wrappers to keep tension on the wrap while doing it. Is it possible to do one with a hand wrapper? Re: Butt wrap

Yes if you can keep tension on the threads and keep the rod from turning. Mostly it's keeping the rod from rolling - tension applied by fingers with tape at either end to hold the threads "up" and "down" the rod blank Re: Butt wrap

I've never needed any tension from the carriage or wrapper while doing a decorative butt wrap. I cut the pattern threads to length - enough to make one pass and then bind down onto the tape. Then repeat. The rod has to roll/turn in order to make such a wrap. Just turn it with one hand while holding the pattern threads in the other. You don't need a power wrapper for this. In fact, a power wrapper isn't really of any help in such a wrap.

I use a bobbin to hold the spools while doing dec wraps......and roll the rod with the other hand. Re: Butt wrap

I guess my main concern was how to turn the rod with one hand, hold tread with the other, and not have the blank turn when i go to turn it again. Thinking that when i let go to turn it again, it will move and i'll get slack in the wrap. Re: Butt wrap

No, there isn't any tension on the blank in a decorative wrap - you're holding the pattern threads in one hand. Just turn the blank with your other hand.
I think if you actually try this you'll see why it isn't a problem. .............. Re: Butt wrap

You can try a rubber band around the blank - but on one of the blank holders hooks to put tension on the blank so it does not - Back Turn Maybe some tape around the blank for it to be smooth yet not turn
Got to play with it Bill - willierods.com Re: Butt wrap

Tom has it . Theres no tension on the blank. You turn the blank and apply the threads in the manner you like. I cut my threads to cover the distance needed. Re: Butt wrap
