I was surfing around RodBuilding. Org. the other day, and came across an article i found very interesting but forgot to save. It was how to figure out the correct butt guide size and guide spacing. I remember there being a formula involved. I believe it took the spool diameter times 27 then divided that by another figure. I've been looking all day and can't seem to find it again. If anyone can steer me to the article, i would greatly appreciate it. Re: Butt guide size

Dear Jack. although the new concept guide placement is impressive and easy it forgets about individual blank action (through out the blank), one should think about a static load system for the guides after the CHOKE guide, this will ensure proper spacing to match the action of the blank (in the tip top) were fast taperd blanks can throw the new concept system out. I personaly use a mixture of the two. I use small orings on all my guides and once I find the right stripping guides using new concept I roughly place my running guides (use tape to MARK NEAR A FOOT of new concept stripping guides) I then put a small overhead reel onto the rod, run heavy mono up the middle of the blank and load it up (runners facing up) and tie it off, thread line through runners (you dont have to tie it off, then simply move running guides around so that your line is an even amout away or just touching rod blank. You may find that a on a fast taperd rod the spacing could be SLIGHTLY smaller between runners further down the blank than at the tip thus confirming static load to be important for blank action. You can also spread or close up runner feet at the stripping (new concept) end to get a slowly decrecing line spacing towards the blank, Although some people do not agree with bending guides, I havent had a problem if you are careful not to bend the ring of the frame. I hope you can make sence of my explanation. Once upon a time we use to place guides acording to blank action but new concept forgets about this. Re: Butt guide size

Not really - because of the number of guides used, it would be rare that you wouldn't have enough guides to prevent a bowstring effect anywhere along the blank, particularly beyond the choker guide, regardless of the action. And, if you read both the articles, they mention using a progressive spacing if you wish, which would require you to take the blank's action into account.
