I recently built several trolling rods for a friend of mine. I would like to thank everyone for their advice. He loves his new rods. They have performed flawlessly. Encluding the catch and release of a white marlin. Now he wants some lighter trolling rods to be used for Kings. He did say that he wants unibutts on these rods as well to match his others. There are plenty of blanks out there that fit this bill. I am concerned with finding a blank light enough for the application,as well having a blank wall thick enough to allow for the use of a unibutt. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does he just want the look? A uni-butt can be taken off for storage purposes and/or shared between rods. Maybe he doesn't need that and only wants the looks? If so you have other options. A true uni-butt is overkill for kingfish. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: Blank suggestion for unibutt

It's not about the look... Over kill I know...he's the owner/operator of a charter fishing boatand he's is concerned wtb the grips getting torn up taking rods in and out of rod holders Re: Blank suggestion for unibutt

it sounds like you want a nylon butt. it sometimes is called slick butt or tough butt. it is designed to be in a rodholder and it is straight. I have used them for kingfish rods with great success Re: Blank suggestion for unibutt

The slick butt is the usual choice on such an application and has strong following in the kingfish tournaments. To me, a uni-butt forces you into a weight penality that I wouldn't want on a kingfish rod. High speed wahoo trolling, okay, kingfish, no way.
Really it isn't a big deal to replace grips and you can generally clean and sand back a few times before that must be done. For a reasonable priced and durable choice consider the rainshadow rclb line. If he must have the uni-butt I'd look towards calstar and seeker. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: Blank suggestion for unibutt

Hello David
The smallest Uni-Butt ferrule (UB1) is 3/4" or .750. My favorite blank for King is the Seeker GTS70L but it is only .645" so an arbor would be needed to use it with a Uni-Butt. But I am with others here and believe the weight precludes using one on a King rod. Good Luck. Bob, New Bern, NC. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/05/2012 08:39AM by Robert A. Guist.
