I've just stripped a 5 ft. feather weight spinning rod of the guides. It had a total of four guides and a tip top. Does this sound right for this rod?
I'm also thinking about replacing the grips with custom made. Should I strip varnish from rod or just put a new coat on. any and all ideas welcome.

Dick,

4 guides plus top was pretty standard on 5 ft. rods back in the day. That may be enough, or you may need to add a guide depending on what your static test tells you. If you're going to replace the grip, I'd go ahead and strip the rod to the bare blank, since you've already pulled off the guides.
