IMO, the only reason for a winding check other than eye appeal would be to cover up a blemish, defect or gap.

A friend’s saltwater rod sheared off at the winding check due to the WC cutting into the fibers when the blank “ovaled” under load. I usually allow room for two layers of thread under the WC. Epoxy finish wicks under it, and the raised edge of the WC allows subsequent epoxy applications to ramp up against the leading edge, rather than flowing up over the leading edge of the WC.
