Snake Skin

I am interested in attempting my first snake skin inlay. I would like to put a section between split grips, and also under each guide. I have seen this before and think it looks pretty sharp! Question is, how many inches would you recommend for a seven foot rod? I really don’t want to waste any part of the animal (besides trimmings of course). Also any suggestions on thread and/or rod color? I was thinking about a maroon threat color with the St. Croix inshore copper pearl rod. Thanks again for everyones help, and suggestions.

Andrew,

I can't really recommend how many inches of skin to buy without knowing the distance between your split grips. The only way to figure out what you are going to need is to mock up your build and measure. After you find out the total length you'll need, add a few inches to give yourself some extra to work with.

Earth tone colors look best with snake skin. Your idea of snake skin with maroon wraps on the Avid Inshore should be beautiful!

I have a good idea of what length rear grip I'm going to use and an idea of how much distance I'm going to have between the grips.
I'm working on one now and will be using dark green with gold inlays but the Curado is green with gold flakes and lettering.

Just finished some diamond back rattler. I like bright colors trimmed in gold.
Always put your shin on the same direction as the thread and use CP.
Then I wrap over completely with white tread to hold in place. everything comes out nice and smooth. After a good 24 hr. drying and slowly take off all the white tread cover again with CP.
