Birch Bark and Other stuff

I am trying to find out which one of the sponsors to the left carries birch bark and other materials for making handles/grips. I'm looking to put some different materials together for unique setup. Anyone know who sells it?

Hi, Dave,
Mark Crouse gave a seminar at High Point part of which showed the use of birch bark.
Maybe he will chime in with a source for you.
Good Luck

I actually was there at the seminar. He was also at our rod builders gathering in Ohio on Saturday. I'll shoot him an e-mail. Thanks.

If it's available in your area, go harvest yourself! (PLEASE from dead trees only!!!) - I've found it to be, well, VERY expensive no matter where I've looked. Obviously, if you are not in birch country this is not an option :-(

I live in Coshocton, OH. I don't know if I would be able to spot a Birch tree if it was right in front of me. I need to do some searching and look at pictures of trees (educate myself). I did find some on the @#$%& site though. I do hope Mudhole puts it on their webpage soon..

If you are in a birch area, you can often go to wood piles of birch, get permission and strip the bark from the wood piles.

A few minutes and you can have as much bark as you want and it is generally free except for your time. But you get to work in the out of doors, generally in some very pretty places.

Take care
Roger

David,
we are not in "birch country" but there are birch trees around here. The thing with birch bark is that you want to buy or harvest it from an area that is very cold. This will produce the thickest bark possible. If you find some from Michigan's U.P. or Main or even better Siberian you will be very pleased. Thicker bark=less rings needed to glue and stack.

There are a few different types of birch around here, river birch is more of a cinniman color and whitespire birch is very white. The tell tail sign of either is the exfoliating (spelling??) bark.

Best of luck.

Eric
