changing the color of an (old) blank

I've read the articles on Refinishing a rod blank and on the water break free process. I'm putting new guides and extending the butt on a very old rod, one that I'll use just for down rigger fishing for trout and kokanee. I don't want to put the money for a high end automobile urethane into this rod, has anyone had any experience in a color coat other than what the article talks about? Any help will really be appreciated.

I have refinished two rods with Krylon spray and urethane clear spray all from an aerosol can. Have used them for several months and they look Great.
