Saving parts off an old rod

The parts and pieces for my first rod build are on there way. In the mean time though I have an Ice rod that my cats chewed through and I would like to try and save the cork handle off it. Does anyone have any ideas on how to separate the two?

I would think it is nearly impossible to break the bond between the cork and the blank without destroying the grip.

Don't separate them. Depending on the inside / outside rod diameters your choices are to slide a new blank inside the old one (probably difficult to do with an ice rod) or cut off the old rod blank and over sleeve / scarf a new blank above the handle / below the cat damage

Always save parts from an old rod. You never know when you may need them for repairs somewhere along the line. They are also great for practice wraps.
