I am very new to dec wraps....I have done a few diamonds and chevrons in the past. I am trying to do a butt wrap to simulate flames. This pic is of my first dry run.
[www.rodbuilding.org] I was hoping you guys might give me a little advice on making it look more like flames. Elongate? Compress? Add a color....more of one of the colors I am already using? Should I use black guide threads? No guide thread? It will be done on a bright red blank. Sorry about the poor photo...it was done with my phone. Thanks in advance, Joe Edited 1 time(s). Not enough colors in your wrap to get the effect you're looking for. I recently did a "flame" type wrap here:
[www.rodbuilding.org] There are 5 shades of orange and yellow in that. You can make the effect even more dramatic than what I did there. You don't want hard breaks between colors either. You sort of blend them was you move out on the wrap. Check with Billy Vivona. He can set you up with some colors and also tips on the transition between them to get more of the fade you're looking for. Good luck. Re: Help with butt wrap please?

Thanks Bob.....A fade is definitely going to help. I am going to also add a lighter yellow and then another orange. I may eliminate the red altogether.
Billy has already helped me with the plan for this rod......he was very generous with his info. Re: Help with butt wrap please?

Ref: I may eliminate the red altogether.
I was working on marbelizing flames and searched the web for different techniques used by guys that put flames on motorcycles and such. Most of the sites mentioned that there really isn't any red in a flame; there may be a yellowish white hot base quickly turning to yellow and then orange. Flames are most usually viewed in the dark and the transparent orange flames with the dark background makes the flames appear redish. I find that using very reddish orange makes the static flame image look more like my perception of how flames should appear. I've also made some flames with nothing but red and they looked pretty cool to me too. In looking at your wrap I had a thought... what if you wrapped a nice fade and finished it like a tartan; no CP. I think the overlapping whites, yellows, and oranges showing through each other could lend a lot of depth and give a neat 3D fade that you couldn't get with a regular CP'd wrap. I'll have to try a couple test wraps :) Re: Help with butt wrap please?

Hey Joe,
One thing you may also want to try is blending more of the colors together. If you start out with white and go into yellow, what you may want to do is put some yellow into the white. Say your white section is a 10 thread thickness, at thread 6 insert yellow at every other white the wrap 5 solid yellow and insert light orange at thread 6 of the yellow and repeat til you get to the dark red. This will give the illusion of fading from light to dark. hope that helps. When I make flame blends I go from black to candy red to burnt orange to orange to golden rod then sushine yellow. If you have any questions let me know. Tight lines, John Hernandez Re: Help with butt wrap please?

Man.....you guys are great!
I tried out a fade last night.....I started with 6 white...then alternated with a few yellow threads before changing over to all yellow....then did the same with a darker yellow....it looks WAAAAAYYYY better. (Gudebrod white-lemon yellow-goldenrod I was going to use Gudebrod Sunburst next but the white/yellow fade works so well that the sunburst is too high of a contrast against the goldenrod. Once I find the right oranges I will be good to go. James.....the blank is going to be red so I think it may work very well without any red at all. I will be sure to post up a pic of the wrap when I am done. I really appreciate you guys taking the time to help out a noobie like me. Re: Help with butt wrap please?

That's why this is the best board anywhere. We are all just rying to improve our craft or try new tricks of the trade. Been doing this for over 35 years and still amazed at how many new techniques are brought to light. Just ask and someone will help out.

Thanks....I think I am on the right track with the colors. I stopped in to see Donna of DONART at her shop on Sunday afternoon. She was very helpful and we found some good colors. I can't wait to start wrapping. :) Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
