Simple Spiral Guide Sizes?

For my 10' shark rod I'm thinking about using the simple spiral method for guide placement. For the conventional setup I was going to use Batson 30, 25, 20, 16, 12, 12, 12, 12, tip for the guide sizes. So for the simple spiral I should place them basically in the same position as the conventional setup except put the 30 at 0 degrees and 25 to tip at 180 degrees from the reel. Then halfway in between the 30 and 25 I would put a smaller ring, maybe a size 20?, at 90 degrees for the bumper? However I don't space the bumper it's just halfway between what the conventional placement would be between the 30 and 25? Does this sound right?

Placement is correct, but you don't need all those different sizes regardless of whether you're using a conventional set up or the Simple Spiral.

Put your 0 degree butt guide (are you sure you need a 30?) in the location you deem suitable. Then use size 12's the rest of the way out. I'd also use a size 12 for the Bumper guide but reshape the frame a bit so it effectively sits a little lower/closer to the rod blank.

It's for an Avet EX50W (130lb braid backing with 100lb mono topshot) reel, the shop here in town recommended a 30, this is actually the first rod I'm building so I'm just going by what I'm reading and suggestions right now.

Just make sure your leader to line connection knot will easily pass through the 12's.

Thanks for the help, looks like I need to go exchange some guides.

Remember, using more guide sizes does not result in anything other than something that may appear more pleasing to the eye. The line doesn't care and using fewer sizes actually results in a straighter and smoother line path.
