Hi,
the diameter of the blank I´m working on right now is so large, that the normal simple spiral method that I usually use won´t work. I just can´t get the line properly around the blank without the line rubbing. Since I don´t like other methods like the revolver, I was wondering if I can use a second bumper guide for the simple spiral. Instead of one bumper in the middle at 90°, two bumpers at about 45° and 135° and staying with the 8 inch between butt guide and first 180. Thanks for your advice Max Re: Problems with Simple Spiral on a very large diam. blank. 2nd bumper guide possible?

You sure can.. I made one rod with one bumper guide that way and all the rest have had two transition guides. Re: Problems with Simple Spiral on a very large diam. blank. 2nd bumper guide possible?

Yes you can, or you can just use a higher framed single bumper guide.
Out of curiousity, how far apart are your first and second guides (not the bumper - the 0 and 180 degree guides)? ............. Re: Problems with Simple Spiral on a very large diam. blank. 2nd bumper guide possible?

Hi Tom,
> Out of curiousity, how far apart are your first > and second guides (not the bumper - the 0 and 180 > degree guides)? I always put the first two guides 20cm/8inch away from each other. What would you prefer, a higher framed bumper, which I don´t like because of the extra lever or an extra bumper? I never use bumpers larger than a BLAG7, because the 8 is already too high in my opinion. I always start with a BLNAG6-8 and the first 180° is a BLAG4. It shouldn't be a lever because the only pressure on it will be directly back into the rod blank. There shouldn't be any side pressure on a bumper guide.
If you have a very slow action blank, you might opt to locate it at from 100 to 110 degrees instead of 90. If you do decide to use 2 guides, that's fine. But I'd experiment with a higher bumper and/or a larger ring on the butt guide. Either or both may solve your problem. ............... Me, I'd take that bumper out of the equation and do a slow spiral. Just line the guides up all on top as usual, flip them all to the bottom except the 1st 3 coming from the reel. Offset the 1st guide from the reel about 10 degrees and adjust the other 2 accordingly all in the same direction to get as straight a line path as possible. This works VERY well for me even on larger blanks like Musky/Salt rods. Just an option.

I do exactly the same thing that Duane does and it works very well on all sized blanks.

i had a brain fart with a flipping stick. got it all done and ran line through it and managed to get the bumper in the wrong spot.... must've been in a hurry (personal rod). I just added another guide at the point where the line was hitting the blank and called it good. Looks a bit unconventional, but then again - not much about a spiral wrap does.
