With 50 - 80 lb mono what would you guys say is a good size for the ring on running guides.
Thanks Bill - willierods.com Re: Running guides

Bill,
Any size you want. The real issue is whether you plan to run any knots, snaps or swivels through the guides. Roger Re: Running guides

Your right there Roger. Got to find out his line set up I was just thinking about maybe 8's being the smallest. depending on his knots. Bill - willierods.com Re: Running guides

I tend to agree with your line of thinking. If this is going to be a salt water rod, with its inherent knots and ties,I would likly go with the size 8s as well.

Hi Bill, I use size 8 guides (AMTAC) on my rods. I use 50lb braid and then 60 or 80lb mono wind in leaders. I use the bimini twist in the braid and use a cat paws to attached the dacron loop in the wind on leader. I have even used 100lb mono wind on leader in this set up with the size 8 guides. Never had a problem casting (although we dont cast much for bottom bashing or trolling) and never had the line or knots catch.
With the rig above, I use 40lb wind on leader with size 4 micros, and still casts a mile, no catch ups etc. Regards Adam Re: Running guides

On my personal rods, I use 8 rings, but on most rods I will use a setup like 20 or 16, 12 then 10s for running guides. The reason is a 50 to 50# uni in case of a splice (things happen) or some other random unforseen knot ends up in the way, a 10 ring will have very little issues ever passing. If you have ever tied a 80 to 80 uni, its a big knot. A 10 will pass it but it still may not be smoothly. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
