I'm thinking of building a rod for use on speck. trout, fishing from a kayak, casting 1/4 oz. jigs, on this blank. Does anyone have experience with this blank? It this a reasonable selection for this application?

Just my opinion, but I would look at the CB843 or P843 instead. I like a tad slower AND a tad heavier blank for inshore use.

John -- Jim Gamble has suggested two MHX blanks that work very well for speckled trout fishing. I can also assure you that the SJ842 MHX is a darn good choice, especially for tossing 1/4 oz. jigs. I personally use the SJ842 MHX and it is my choice for using a 1/4 oz. jig head and plastic combination. You can't go wrong with either of Jim's suggestions and I would definately say the SJ 842 MHX is a reasonable selection for the application.

update.. im very pleased with the rod, it is every thing i wanted ,very lite ..you can feel every bump...( 3 redfish all on the jig bounced on the bottom..) you can just flick a jig right where you want it to be..
the casting is excellent..and the rod has great back bone.. as tested out today on some jacks .. man with the cooler weather ..has kicked the fish into high gear..those things can make your drag scream... lol
after fishing mod fast rods for years.. im now a fast action rod convert...less effort to cast out ..ever thing just feels more responsive.. fighting the fish you can react quick and turn there head..with less effort.. i guess take all this with a grain of salt.. after all its just my take on the new rod.. long story short ,i will be buying more mhx rods ;)..also thanks for all your help at mudhole..and thanks for the great info ive gained from this forum ..and the rod builders library..
one thing i would change is the reel seat, my next rod.. will have a areo comfort on it.. but even with my lil mistakes this was my first spinning rod build.. ill take it over a factory rod any day...

i just wish i had started building custom rods like this years ago... thanks for reading along ..

Chuck -

Any chance I could get your guide spacing on your SJ842? I'm building one (first rod) and all I have are the generic recommendations for a 7' spinning rod.

Thanks in Advance,
