Rod Labels and action descriptions.

I wonder if the CCS ratings for this blank would match up with fast action?

The AA ratings don't apply to subjective terms any more than 70 inches would match up to "long" or 80 degrees to "hot."

All rods have a progressive action - the greater the load the deeper they flex. "Fast Action" doesn't mean that a rod won't flex deeply into the butt section. It only means that the initial flex begins in the upper 1/3rd of its length. How deeply it flexes depends on how much load you apply to it.

The photo clearly illustrates a blank that has been loaded by casting a lure. The maximum deflection is approximately 90 degrees. The visually observable blank curvature from butt to tip is almost parabolic. For fast action blanks most interpret the words to mean that "most of the flex occurs in the upper 1/3 of the blank - there is a definable slope change from butt to tip which shifts closer to the tip for blanks with fast action. I do not think you are saying that increasing load can make a fast action blank turn into a moderate action.

Action is where it flexes initially. The idea that a fast action blank only flexes in the upper 1/3rd is inaccurate.

Even a fast action blank will flex deeply into the butt area if you apply more and more load to it. I see nothing in that photo that would indicate that blank is not fast action blank.

All of my rods flex mostly in the bottom third once they are heavily loaded. This includes all those which the maker has labeled as "fast action." The tip or upper third straightens out once a solid load is on the rod. The flex moves to the butt end.

This is true of all rods, regardless of action. The greater the load, the further the flex will move towards the butt end. Action is where the rod initially flexes, not where most of the flex takes place. The latter is a function of how much load you have on the rod. It will always initially flex in the same area, but where most of the flex takes place will vary depending on the load you have on the rod.
