Anyone Dip their handles to finish????

I am working on a split grip handle of Cherry Burl non-stabilized. I have put a few coats of Spar finish on it but have not been satisfied as of yet. Tonight I "dipped" the sections in the finish and hung them to dry. I am not really worried about the dry time, if it takes a week so be it as I am just working on this as a demo rod. Has anyone else tried this? Just shooting for a nice smooth finish and figured it works for bamboo rods so why not a handle. Thoughts?

I think the urethane coating technique in a recent issue of RodMaker will provide the hardest, longest wearing, yet lightest surface coating you can put on rod grip. I have gone to it for everything.

Thanks, I really need to renew my subscription. It lapsed and I am missing out! I will have to order that one at the same time.

I use a dipping process on my reel seats using Tru-Oil and Micro Mesh. It works very well:

Very nice. Normaly I will use stabilized but not this time. I will try it out and see how it works.

just checked out the mostly dried product and after the first dip it looks great. I will let it cure tonight, light scuff with the 0000 wool and then another one tomorrow and I think we have a winner. I really like the way it turned out and think I may try a few new ways but if it continues I have found a new method.
