refinishing

I have a rod that I am doing some work on.
It is the 2nd or 3rd rod I made. I made this rod for my brother in 1974 or 1975. The chevron has come loose and broken in a few places. All of the Guide wraps are intact, it is just the chevron that is "bad". He told me "do not change the guide wraps just the butt wrap". I have taken the chevron thread off and am now I am going to redo the wrap, the under wrap is OK so am not plannng on removing it.

The finish I used on it the first time was Varnish. As I remember I put on 8 or 10 coats of varnish. Over time the varnish has "disappeared". It feels like there is only CP on the threads now.
The real question is.......can I put an other type of finish over the varnish? I will reapply finish on the guide wraps too.

thanks

Yes you can, but you have to remember that the varnish is the base layer so if it lifts or peels, so will whatever you put on top of it.

You will be better off taking all the thread off and starting from new.

I am almost positive that the varnish has already peeled off. The thread feels like it only has CP in it.
I only made about 4 rods with the varnish. The one I had all of the varnish cracked, lifted and peeled off so did the one I made for dad. I peeled off the remaining varnish and re varnished the one for dad. I stripped the one I had and rebuilt.
On the one I had the varnish came off of each wrap in 3 or 4 "sections" was not a big deal to take it off. I think all of the varnish is gone. Like I said it feels like there is not any finish on it.

Thanks for the help

You can always apply another coat of CP (I would) and then epoxy. What is the worst that could happen?

Tom,
If the rod was built in 1974 or 1975 do both yourself and your brother a favor.

Cut all of the guides off of the rod, clean up the blank, and tie on a new set of modern guides along with a new chevron.

Use a good 2-part thread wrap coating and call it good.

Take care
Roger
