I am removing guides and putting on new ones for a client. I was wondering if anyone has a trick to making this a little easier and so I can get all the old finish off without damaging the rod. Re: Removing guides

I use a heat gun and a razor blade. Apply as little heat as required, hold the razor blade perpendicular to the blank and scrape off the finish.
It works well if you get it warm enough. Make sure you don't scorch the blank. Good Luck, it's a lot of work. Re: Removing guides

I've had luck using my thumbnail in place of the razor blade Re: Removing guides

Have done many. This works for me. First use new blade. Start where the thread starts to climb the guide. Cut right to the guide foot working back towards the eye. If blade slips the eye will stop it. Same on other side and guide will come right off. Now peel the thread remaining. Some cleaning up with blade. Should be ready to rewrap
Sometimes the rewrap may be a tad longer than orig. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
