Finish for a vinyl winding check?

Greetings,
Do folks typically use rod finish on top of a vinyl winding check, or leave it un finished? I will have the check epoxied up against a hypalon foregrip, and I'll be wrapping decorative thread right up to the check. None of my personal rods have a check for a reference. Thanks for answering a kind of stupid question! John Esler Portland OR Re: Finish for a vinyl winding check?

Personally John, I have never been a fan of epoxy over a winding check. Vinyl or rubber winding checks are very likely to flex some during the life of the rod. That means that a void will appear under the thread epoxy as the epoxy separates from the winding check.

I always epoxy over mine, because after a year or so of use, an un-finished winding check will start to crack and tear. Finishing over a winding check will keep it from cracking over the years. Re: Finish for a vinyl winding check?
