Finish problem

Just finished my 2nd coat of finish about 3 hours ago. Went down to the shop to put a few things away and the wrapper had tipped over. I got finish everywhere and my wraps are warped and flattened. Tried to use heat to smooth out and some worked but some ended burning and bubbling. Can I use an adhesive remover like goof off and dab it on the bubbles and burns to remove the bad parts and then re-do the finish???

You aren't going to like this, but ...

It won't get better with "repairs", just worse. The easiest AND most productive thing to do is to strip the epoxy, wraps, etc. and start over. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Look at the bright side, you didn't break the blank and all the parts are still there. Learn from it and move on.

BTW, quick clamps (the plastic kind that are $2-3) will be your new best friend. Clamp the bases of your dryer/wrapper to the front edge of the workbench and this won't be able to happen again.

Jim is correct. The mess is best removed and start over and chalk it up to " a lesson learned."

Jim,
Same thing happened to me a long time ago. I stripped the guides and wrap and redid the guides and wraps.

Then I CLAMPED the dryer to the table so that it couldn't happen in the future. If you don't already have - get a good selection of various sized c-c lamps.
A million uses for good clamps during rod building.

Jim -

In the future stay away from the heat. I used an alcohol lamp to smooth out the finish, but I have gotten completely away from it. If you get bumps, hills and valleys, football type finish, etc - What has worked for me is to let it dry/cure well, take some 300-600 grit sandpaper and carefully sand down the problem areas. Wipe down the epoxy (no acetone, I don't even use DNA) and put on another coat of finish. Another light coat of epoxy can fix many problems. Another tip that has helped me is to put the finish on quickly (no brushing) then for the first hour I turn the rod 180 degrees every 3-5 minutes. The appearance of my wraps has improved considerably. There are many good articles in the "Search" area on finish on this forum and in Rodmaker.

Good Luck.

Thanks for all the help. Well I decided to try something since I basically had nothing to lose. Wetsanding. However did not do much so I went to the Home Depot and got some metal files. Using an extremely fine file and keeping the finish wet I was able to smooth out the damage and I just applied more finish and I think this is going to work
