You might consider a different leader setup, which would solve the problem without changing the guides. I use a 10# leader for trout and reds (I mostly fish the intracoastal flats in Pinellas County). The leader is about 4 feet long with an albright knot connecting to a Power Pro main line. I then tie on about 9 to 12 inches of 25# bite tippet. When I cast, I leave the bite tippet knot outside of the tip. I use a spinning rod, but I think the principle would be the same on a casting rod. Re: Inshore casting rod

David,
I am building one rod for specks and reds and am going with 4's. I am 70 years old and my vision is failing to some extent. I use 12 lb. mono to which I attach a twelve inch 30 lb. leader. A small barrel swivel connects the two. I throw a lot of plastic and weedless spoons. If I go with a spinner bait then I will tie directly to the lure. I fished two days last week with a similar rod and had no problems. I caught 7 reds one day and chased birds the next with only a few small specks to show for it. Re: Inshore casting rod

I do catch an occasional snook that is the reason I stay with the 30lb leader I guess I need to start tying shorter leaders ... Re: Inshore casting rod

I just finished a casting rod with all 3's on top and fished it for the first time this saturday on the flats here on South Padre Island, TX. I use 15# power pro with a 10" 15# flouro leader. I was amazed how well it would cast. I am a spinning rod guy usually. Sight casting weedless plastics on the grass flats no problem, just . The reds here though are not shy about leaders. I would just reel up to the knot. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
