I've a 6' 2piece 4 weight St Croix SCIV
I'm considering the possibility of making this rod a convertible fly/spin with the addition of a removable rear grip. Can a female brass ferrule be built into the reel seat to allow the removal of a 6" spin grip with male ferrule attached ? My concerns are the torque placed on the ferrule connection while used as a spinning rod. The rod will be used as an UL casting 1/16 oz max on 4# max line. Has anyone had bad experience utilizing this concept ? I don't want the extra weight of a rear grip or the reduction of length due to it while in fly rod duty. I don't mind the rod becoming a 6'6" while in spinning mode but don't want the rear grip becoming loose or rotating. All the convertibles I've seen to date have been terrible at fly rod duty and mediocre at spinning rod use. I'm open to any suggestions that could could make this work. It will be built for personal use until the rod can an effective fly rod with additional use as a spinner. Comments good or bad would be greatly appreciated. Eugene Moore Re: Removable rear grip

This was fully covered in a recent issue of RodMaker. It is perfectly effective for either spinning or casting. Too much to go into here, but suffice to say it can certainly be done. The crux of the matter will be how well suited the blank you choose is to the tasks you ask of it. The handle part is a piece of cake.

I built a 7' 3 wt as a spin, used a slim fly rod grip with a spin reel seat and 3" rear grip.
The point is that it is used as a spin rod with an "underspin" closed face reel. The wife uses it often and loves the balance factor and ease of use of the lever control on the under spin. Also the slim grip fits her smaller hand. As a Christmas present I then built her a 7' built on a Batson IP841, again with an underspin reel, this time a Shekespeare in a larger size. She christened it with a 10# Hybrid Striped Bass and it worked great. Underspin reels may be an answer to anyone that wants to use a fly rod for spin duty without changing anything but just the reel. Or as a custom built rod that some people may find easier to work with.
