Fly rod experiment

I haven't built that many fly rods, maybe 5-6. Last night I was going through my guides and I found some chrome flex lite guides (from Janns Netcraft) and I thought "why haven't I tried these on a fly rod?". I had a 7'6" 4/5 wt tiger eye just sitting there that I had already glued up the grip and reel seat so I decided to try it out. I used a sz 8 double foot then sz 6 single feet to the tip. The only chrome tip I had in the right size was one of the Pac Bay Minima P tops (it could be one of the Berkley tips?) so I glued it on. It casts awesome. I wrapped it with the new fish hawk variegated thread (teddy was the color). I put a thin coat of FC lite on this morning and I can't wait to get this rod out on the water.

Not sure what guides those are, but in times past many folks used the Aetna Foulproof guides on fly rods with excellent results. Maybe a little heavy by today's standards, but I still see them out there from time to time.

The guides look just like REC recoils. They are quite light. I don't have a digital scale, but I used lee magnetic reloading scale to compare the weights of some of the guides I have and the flex lite guides were as light or lighter than some of the "fly" guides I had.

I have used these guides with GREAT success on float rods. I find them of a MUCH higer value that Recoils at 1/16 the price.

I really like the guides too. I've built a few spinning rods with them and last time I ordered from Janns I added a few of the double foot guides to mess around with maybe spiraling a rod. I instead used them on the fly rod and I was out in the yard again yesterday casting with it. The TiCH ones are really sharp.
