Well I have been thinking the same thing.
Havent put it into action yet but a did build a mount from a old reel to hold the lazer. What did you have in mind. Re: lazers for setting up eyes

Yes, and generally are tough to get to work well. Perhaps you can develop a system that will work well.
Certainly worth a try and publish any results that you might get. Lots of inexpensive lasers are readily available. LED flashlights with a led beam, Laser levels etc. Give one a try and let us know how it works out. Take care Roger Re: lazers for setting up eyes

Yeah I tried it, no matter how straight you think a blank is, there is always a curve. I have found that the old naked or eyeglass corrected if needed eye works best. I'd say save your money and time and get a nicer blank or components. Re: lazers for setting up eyes

I do it all the time. I have a little lazer from Radio Shack that looks like a fat pencil. It is designed to be a pointer.
I place it on the flat of the reel seat and shoot thru the guides. I align it such that it hits the bottom of the first guide and it will likely hit the bottom of the next few. On a straight rod with aligned guides, the laser hits the guides either on the bottom of the ring or the top of the smaller ones. If the rod has a curve, I do it by sighting. I think I am just as accurate by sight as I am with the laser. What gets me sometimes, is that the laser goes all the way thru and does not hit anything. Drove me crazy at first unitl I figured it out! Re: lazers for setting up eyes

I think that Bryan really nailed the base problem. Not too many blanks that we build on - can be considered absolutely straight. It is pretty easy for the eye to correct for slight differences, average out the bend or twist and come up with the best guide alignment.
But for the fixed laser, there will be no guessing and no averaging. Take care Roger Re: lazers for setting up eyes

I have one for years! I only used it 4 time, it was a pain in the backside. Just as long as you have the normal spline access aligned. The tip top and the reel seat in the correct position everything else should follow threw. If you have a question about guides being in the right position after wrapping. take a string attach it to the the center of the reel seat then run it threw all the guides. now place a small weight to the string and let it fall. You well see if the guides are aligned . The string rest in the center of the guides . I now use the lazer to make sure my wife's pictures are hung correctly Good Wraps Bob Re: lazers for setting up eyes

You guys are obviously going about it the wrong way...
"Laser micrometer and laser alignment machinery assures every guide and handle is put on perfectly straight. " [stcroixrods.com] Then again, maybe you aren't spending enough money on your set up! :) ----------------- AD Re: lazers for setting up eyes

Alex: How do you do it? Also how do you you adjust the guides when there is a minimal curve in the blank. As for aligning the reel seat. What method do you use, also are you using the true axises of the blank or are you using the spline of the blank (for the lack of a better term) Good Wraps Bob Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
