Josh,
The process is very simple.
Pick up a piece of rod blank. Either new or from an old cut up rod. Select a piece of blank that will either fit tightly inside the blank butt or fit tighty outside the blank butt. When selecting your extension, try to get an extension that has a similar taper as your existing blank to allow the extension taper match the blank taper for an overall better fit with less slop and play.

Generally speaking for very large rods, I use extensions that fit on the inside of the rod butt. For very small rods, I tend to use extensions that fit on the outside of the blank. Before testing for fit, if the blank extension is going to be used on the inside of the blank and if the extension has been recoved from an old rod, be sure to scrape all of the old finish off the old rod. By scraping off the old finish - using a bit of heat - the rod extension will better fit the inside of the existing blank. Then, just use epoxy glue to glue the extension in place before working with the handle. When adding the handle, simply size the handle inside diameter to match your extension and glue it up as part of your build.

Good luck
Roger
