Splitting a larger tip top? - Bill Stevens?

I have a Musky rod with specific guides where the tip top available for this tube size is only made in a 10 ring. I have an 8 ring that is about 1/2 a size too small in the tube. I'd like to split this tube just enough to get the tip on the rod. The un-split tube ALMOST will go on the rod, I know it will take very little opening up to get the tube on the rod. Has anyone split a tich framed 7.5mm tube tip top? I'm guessing the exact o knife may be a little weak? And, yes I did a search. Once split will, the tube need to be wrapped, I'm guessing yes?

I have split tubes up to a 6.5. The Exacto knife will work, but it needs to have a brand new blade, go slow, and rock it a little. Glue the tip on with some strong glue, I have used CA or 5 Minute successfully, once you have it glued on you have to wrap it and cover it with finish, I hate the look of thread on a tip enough that I use black thread to wrap ones I have split. Permagloss or Lumiseal would probably be stronger to finish the thread with, but I have had no problems using regular old Threadmaster even on flipping sticks that will see very heavy duty service.

Thanks Mike.

After I posted this I just went and did it by trial and error. Came out great to be honest, I just did as you suggested, my top was a 9 tube, I was wrong on the 7. It was kinda thick, but it split fine with the new exacto blade and a little force from a small hammer. I held the top with locking forceps with them intertwined in the braces of the tip top. Sure beats going to a 10ring when my runners are 6's. I can live with the 8mm ring :-)
