salt water builds

A funny thing happened on my way to the expo, I stopped off at my son's place in SC for a visit and ended up with a dozen salt water rods for repair. You know the old "my dad can fix anything " routine. At any rate these are mostly the old solid glass wooden handle boat rod types. He wants me to convert 3 of them to spiral wraps. This should be no problem as I've done a couple of dozen bass rods with the simple spiral method. I was thinking of using a # 8 or #10 guide for the bumper. Does this sound right? How far from the reel seat shoud my first guide fall? The second question I have is who carries the old mushroom rubber slip on butt caps? I thought they would be a simple replacement but it looks like my usual suppliers no longer carry them. Been a long time since I worked on salt water gear. Thanks in advance for any help.
