I've never seen these vintage guides on a rod before. They have a long foot and a short foot. Which end should point towards the butt of the rod?

Hi Curtis,
Tradionaly the longer leg would go towards the butt.
Sometimes the butt guide would be reversed, with the thought that it gave a little more clearence for the line coming off the reel.
I've usually done it with all the long legs facing down towards the butt.

Best wishes,
Ron Schneider

They are no longer made by Aetna but I think American Tackle offers a modern version of the same thing.

I usually have the long legs toward the butt as well. If you are interested, Half Hitch Tackle in Panama City, Florida has a local guy that makes them. I bought some and they are good quality and come in sets of 5 and 6. Talk to a Ron and see if they have any in stock.
