Has anyone built a rod on the matrix blank listed in the title? My wife's boss wants me to build a 5'6" UL rod for him as gift for his brother who is disabled and he wants to spend $200 or less.
I have built a few fly rods and about 10 spinning rods, but I haven't used one of the matrix spinning blanks yet. If anyone has used this blank I'm curious if it is a "noodle" or if it is fairly stiff. I'm pretty sure I'm going to use the flexlite guides from Janns with a fuji skeleton seat with cork insert and a split grip. It should be a very light set up. Also if anyone has any other suggestions for a blank to use I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Re: AM Tak Matrix P661-2 (5'6" 2pc UL)

I've built a spinning rod for a friend on a 2 pc. 6'6" Matrix Blank - Extra Light, and my friend uses it for everything from small stream trout to Largemouth Bass. He says he's quite impressed with it. The only thing that he (and I) did not like about it was how the twill pattern terminates very ununiformly up the blank. If you were to wind over this area to create a more aesthetically pleasing transition, it would require quite the lengthy wrap.
I'm personally a little more inclined to go with a St. Croix, but the feedback on the performance of the only Matrix I've built gives me another viable option. Re: AM Tak Matrix P661-2 (5'6" 2pc UL)

The AMTAK 5'6" matrix blank is just what is says: Ultra light. I've built several of them that people use for panfish and small stream trout rods. They're fun - check the line rating and the lure rating. I've found the AMTAK descriptions very good Re: AM Tak Matrix P661-2 (5'6" 2pc UL)

Thanks I looked at the St. Croix blanks and I've got the SCIII on my list as one of the options, but I was curious if anyone had used the Am Tak blank. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/22/2010 04:13PM by Ben Claxton. Re: AM Tak Matrix P661-2 (5'6" 2pc UL)

I have built quite a few, and they are very nice. They have some flex in the tip, but good backbone in the lower 2/3 of the blank. A nice crisp little UL. You'll enjoy it. Re: AM Tak Matrix P661-2 (5'6" 2pc UL)

I've built a few of the Matrix UL's. The 5' ones are more moderate, and the 5'6" has a faster action and more beef to the backbone. Great blank! Re: AM Tak Matrix P661-2 (5'6" 2pc UL)
