There is an outfit that comes to the Rod Exposition each year that sells the same items. The Skin Shop is their name. Not sure of the website but I see they are on the list again to be in High Point in Feb.

How hard is it to take real snake skin and turn it into inlays or grip covers?

Not hard at all. It's a really simple way to dress up a custom rod and adang nice way of making some money on one as well.

I use it all the time. My advice would be to use thin skin. The only difficulty I have has (and it was relatively easily fixed by a wife skilled with an Exacto knife) was with the skin of a reticulated python that had a suede-like feel to the back. It was simply too thick.
I have a few hundred inches of cobra skin on hand, and that skin is a dream to work with. It also sells to the customer at a premium because it is something out of the ordinary.

Gary,
I love working with cobra skin, with little to no pattern it's hard to screw up. But I have to admit that I'm working on one with a beautiful diamond back inlay at the moment and the color pattern is awesome to me.

The link you gave to americanheadhunter is a search site. I searched for snakeskin and I believe the page you ended up at is: [www.genuineostrichhides.com]

Got it... you left off the last "s" in the first post and the result was the search site.
