Hi all. I am building my first skeleton seat rod. I have everything set, handle is already epoxied, no problems. Do any of you shim the gap between the reel base and the rod? I know some folks build a shim assembly, so that the seat has a firm presence against the rod blank. I could use cork, but I would think that a rigid piece of something, used as a shim would give me a better sense of feel or vibration. I am sure open to ideas as to what anyone would recommend.
I did use an arbor under the front ring assy. The rear I speced to fit firm to the blank and it did perfectly. This rod is built for a Shimanno Curado. The reel fits very nice, just need a shim, i think. Thanks, Kyle Robinson Re: Question on reel seat shimming for skeleton seats

I'm not following you Kyle. You say you have the seat hoods glued in place correct? The reel feet will sit inside the slots in each hood and seem to float above the blank if no insert was installed between the hoods. I don't see where a shim would be needed. Raymond, Casting rod = curado
No, you so NOT need to shim the space under the bait casting reel, if you wanted a piece there, why not just use a solid seat and not split it at all? DR Re: Question on reel seat shimming for skeleton seats

Everything is fine, the hoods are in place as designed. The feet set inside as intended. My question was, do you ever use a piece between the middle of the reel foot and the blank, as a shim, or just let the reel set in the hoods as designed. The reel fits very nice as it is intended. I was just wondering if a shim was ever used by anyone.
Raymond, you have a good point. I guess that is one of the features of this type of seat. Just new to me! But I like the feel, since I palm the reel when fishing. Kyle Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/21/2009 12:55AM by Kyle Robinson. Re: Question on reel seat shimming for skeleton seats

OK, I follow now Kyle,
Originally the skeleton seats were created so one could put some sort of decorative piece in place of the common barrel and this was most commonly nicely grained wood or cork on fly seats. It spread to spinning & non-trigger casting seats. Now, with the emphesis on lightness many have started using skeleton hardware and leaving the space open like the Minima casting seats by PacBay. Now even trigger loving guys have that option without modifying other style trigger seats. Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it..
