Mark
There are two types of "metallic thread" one is a flat band of mylar - that is not acually a thread. The second is a twist of mylar or metallic filament spun onto a nylon core. The flat mylar has more a holographic look while the twisted pair is much easier to work with as it handles pretty much like regular nylon. There are several brands of each on the market. I think the most popular flat mylar is "holoshimmer" while almost all the major manufacturers have the nylon core thread (J-Metallic, Gudebrod, FishHawk, PacBay, and others) Edited 1 time(s). Mark, nothing different in application, you just have to watch and not mar the color on most metallic's, some have a clear, silver or black core and this can show, also more care is needed when burnishing. Metallics are just as strong as nylon or more.
Best one I've used is the Sulky original metallic's. The holoshimmers and flat threads like Ken spoke of are best for trim bands and such where strength is not required. I wouldn't use holoshimmer to wrap an entire guide. DR Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/16/2009 10:05AM by Duane Richards (DR). Re: Metallic Thread?

All the above with this addative..... Don't use too much tension while wrapping. It is easy to expose the core material by using too much tension. J.B.Hunt Bowling Green, KY Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/16/2009 01:37PM by Jay Hunt. Re: Metallic Thread?

Wrapping is the same but metalic threads do have some quirks that you just have use the threads to discover.
The quirks can differ from brand to brand and generally are no "biggie". You'll like it I'm sure. Metalic threads generally don't like the sewing machine type tentioners that tention the thread itself. It's better if you apply tention to the spool and not the thread.
